He has been knitting baskets from local bamboo for 55 years.

In Cyprus, reed basket weaving is one of the most beautiful examples of traditional handicrafts that has been practiced for centuries. Reeds, which grow abundantly in rural areas, especially along riverbanks and wetlands, are carefully collected and soaked in water to make them more flexible. Artisans prepare the natural material by cutting it into thin strips and shaping it using various weaving techniques. These baskets have long served practical purposes such as carrying agricultural products, aiding in fishing, or providing household storage, while also being valued for their aesthetic appeal.

Today, only a small number of craftsmen continue this tradition, most of them passing down their knowledge orally from one generation to the next. Some artisans combine traditional techniques with modern designs to create decorative and touristic products, helping to preserve the craft while contributing to the local economy. The natural texture, durability, and eco-friendly nature of reed make these baskets a cherished item for both the local community and visitors to the island.
