Ulus Beledoğlu

Ulus Beledoğlu was born in Küçükkaymaklı in 1958. After completing his education at Lefkoşa Türk Lisesi, he studied Business Administration at Hacettepe University in Turkey. Throughout his career, he worked in accounting offices, a commercial bank, the newspaper distribution sector, and as a tradesman.

His interest in mirror frame restoration began by observing other masters at HASDER. Over time, through his own experiments, he gained experience in the craft and has been actively working as a master artisan at HASDER since 2017.

When restoring a mirror, he first identifies the problems on the surface. To complete missing parts and ensure symmetry, he takes a mould from the intact side and recreates the missing sections through casting. If there is a similar mirror available, he also uses it as a reference when taking the mould. He then fills in cracks and holes, prepares the surface for painting, and finally sends the mirror for painting.

For mould making, he uses starch and silicone, while for creating motifs, he uses professional putty. According to Beledoğlu, attaching a chain instead of a string to the back of mirrors is safer, as strings tend to decay and break over time, which can cause the mirror to fall and be damaged.

He emphasises that mirrors are not just decorative objects but carriers of memories. During restoration, he sometimes finds letters, birth dates, notes, and small mementoes hidden inside the frames. For him, every mirror carries a story that connects the past with the present.
